How do I DM people on Reddit without getting banned?
Message one person, about the need in their post, in your own words, with no link. And never write "DM me" in public: it's the DM rule communities write most.
What's safe. What gets you flagged.
Reddit doesn't ban DMs. It bans spam: volume, automation, and messages nobody asked for.
- One person, one messageLots of messages to people who didn't ask
- Their post shows a need you solveThey only mentioned your topic
- Written for them, in your wordsThe same text pasted to everyone
- You click Send yourselfA bot or tool sends for you
- Your help stays in the threadCommenting
DM me

- No link until they replyA link and a pitch in message one
Based on Reddit's spam policy and the DM rules in 3,537 subreddits.
They see one message. Make it count.
When you message someone new, Reddit shows them a request. Anything else you send waits until they accept.
saw your post in r/agency about missed follow-ups. if a simpler crm would fix that for your team of five, would you be open to trying acme crm?
Simplified view of a Reddit chat request.
Communities ban "DM me" twice as often as the DM.
We read the rules of 3,537 subreddits that RedBubblegum scans for its customers. 153 have a rule about DMs. This is what they ban.
How we counted
- Rulebooks
- The written rules of 3,537 subreddits, checked July 4 to October 25, 2026
- DM rules
- Every rule mentioning DMs, PMs or private messages, read and sorted by hand. Rules about messaging moderators were left out.
- Buyer posts
- 1,921 posts that fit one business, from 138 communities with readable rules, July 30 to October 24, 2026
- Links
- 104 of those communities have a clear rule on links from companies; 22 allow a relevant one

Worth a message
- They ask for a tool or a recommendation. "What CRM works for a five-person agency?"
- They describe the exact problem you solve. "We keep missing follow-ups after demos."
- They invite DMs. "Happy to hear options, DM me."
Leave it
- They only mention your topic. Sharing a CRM setup isn't shopping for one.
- The community bans DMs. Check the rules first.
- The post is old, or they already found an answer in the comments.
Question is public and general? A helpful comment often beats a DM, and everyone reading sees it.
Three parts. Under 30 words.
Where you found them, your offer as an answer to their problem, and one easy question.

What to write in your bio
The same rules RedBubblegum follows when it drafts one for you.
Drafted from your website. You review it before it goes on Reddit.
- What you work on, in a lineCasual, first person, under 200 characters.
- Your site, once, plainlyNot "click here", not "book a demo".
- One small personal touchAn emoji is fine. Skip the rocket.
- No pitch, no feature list"Empowering teams to unlock growth" reads like an ad.
- Never say "check my profile"In a thread that breaks the rules in places like r/Entrepreneur.
Seven checks. Ten seconds.
Finding who to message is the slow part. We do that part.
RedBubblegum reads every new post where your buyers talk, marks the ones that invite DMs, and drafts a free first message in the 3-part shape.
Solo developer, product is built. Looking for sales help, happy to chat over DM.
saw your post in r/micro_saas about needing sales help now the product's built. if a shortlist of people already asking for a tool like yours would help, would you be open to trying it?

Questions people ask before they hit Send
Is it allowed to DM people on Reddit about my product?
Yes, if the message is relevant, personal and sent by you to one person. Reddit's spam policy targets large amounts of unsolicited messages and automated promotion. Some communities also ban DMs: of the 3,537 rulebooks we read, 58 ban DMing members uninvited.
Do subreddits ban asking people to DM you?
Yes, and more often than they ban DMs. 118 of the 3,537 rulebooks we read ban asking for DMs in public, like "DM me", "PM for details" or "sent you a DM". r/Entrepreneur, r/startups and r/SaaS all have this rule.
Should I include a link in my first message?
No. A link from a stranger looks like spam and is easy to report. Name your product, keep your link on your Reddit profile, and share it once they reply. Only 21% of the buyer communities we checked let a company share a link even in public.
How many DMs can I send a day?
Reddit doesn't publish a limit. Send only to people whose post shows a need you solve, write each message for that person, and keep the volume to what you can reply to yourself.
Why didn't they reply?
Your first message arrives as a request, and anything else you send is held until they accept. Many people never open requests. Don't follow up; spend the time on the next relevant post.
Can AI write my Reddit DMs?
It can draft them, but read every message and send it yourself. Reddit's spam policy mentions bots and generative AI tools used to spread spam. A draft you check and send by hand is not that.
Message the right people. Skip the searching.
